Our Story
We felt, grieved, and suffered — and changed.
Growing up, I spent most of my childhood years with my best friend and his family after meeting them in 5th grade. It was the first time I went to their house did I learn his father had Parkinson's disease. I didn't quite understand what it was or what it would meant at the time.
As we grew older, his father acted as a mentor to me, protecting me even from a physical attack from a stranger in public. He would prank my best friend and I after we went trick-or-treating by pretending to be on a walkie-talkie with the police for us taking too much candy. Every time I went over to his house, he would greet me in a confident booming voice of great joy.
In 2023, he passed. I couldn't even imagine the burden that his family faced. Knowing the pain they went through, and trying to understand my own feelings about a situation I've never faced, I long contemplated the event and why it was so.
Why do we have to accept that the end of a physical life means the complete loss of an incredible life and legacy lived by an individual? That needed to be changed, and that's why we're here.
